Monkey Mafia single OUT NOW!

Yes, the day has finally come - the first Monkey Mafia single in 13 years is finally released! Being massive fans back in the day (we're showing our age now!) we were thrilled to sign this new material, which places Jon Carter & Co back in the midst of the UKs finest producers. The cover is a reference to the debut album "Shoot The Boss", updated with a snap taken from the recent London riots (which is roughly the time the track was signed). The 7" vinyl contains a remix from Mr Benn, who also designed the sleeve, as well as an exclusive acapella version - not available anywhere else! You can but a copy from Juno, Piccadilly, Rough Trade, Phonica, Chemical, HMV and all the usual places.

Bit of a comic aside - when he received the test pressings, Mr Carter couldn't find a working turntable in his house so ventured down to his local pub to ask if he could use their decks to check it out. It just happens that his local pub is a very popular lesbian bar - cue 10 minutes or so of very confusing dancefloor mayhem!

Keeping it as a family affair, we also have the Turntable Dubbers flying in especially from Belgium for this gig, as well as resident Shepdog keeping things bubbling. Dub Pistols on tour

One of the hardest working (and partying) live bands out there, the Dub Pistols are back with a brand new album and tour to go with it. I've been lucky enough to hear some of the demos and I can tell you, this album is gonna turn some heads! Featuring the usual mix of ska, hip hop & various strains of dance music, the boys have dabbled in a bit of drum & bass on the forthcoming "Worshipping The Dollar", with vocal features by regulars Rodney P, Darrison, Lindy Layton & TK as well as UK hip hop don Akala.

As you know, we're fond of the odd mash-up over here at NICE UP!, but with most acapellas having been rinsed to death its not often something comes along that pricks up your ears like this. Rather than just plonking the acapella on top of a well known tune, Mr Tenoshi (aka Dante Gabriel, Wrongtom collaborator and DJ) has re-written and replayed his own backing tune to fit, creating what we think is one of the finest examples in a long time! Limited vinyl did the rounds at the back end of last year, but thankfully the label have now decided to release it digitally. You can hear a selection of radio DJs giving it a spin below:

Yup, the next instalment of our Free Friday giveaways is one of the remixes from this years massive single from Black Samurai ft Daddy Freddy & The Ragga Twins. We asked Noid's finest The Heavy to take time out from their busy schedules (appearing on Letterman, soundtracking "The Fighter" amongst many other things!) to rework this bumping reggae track. They turned in this brilliant head-nodding hip hop remix, which has been nicing up dancefloors since its release in October.

Some more Mr Benn freeness for you, this was Mr B's very first dabble in making a hip hop reggae mish mash, and it still bangs pretty hard today. The Pharcydes 'Runnun' acapella nestles snugly 'pon a loop of Keith and Tex's classic Trojan riddim 'Tonight', with some extra hip hop drums, keys and strings added for good measure. The eagle eared amongst you will also notice a bit of hyping from the one like Souls Liberation too. It was originally only available on a limited mix CD by Mr Benn & Si Collins called 'Numbers Sound' which was made to promote a night the two ran back in the day, but now after being recued from the archives of Mr Benn's studio, you can all get your mits on it for free.

David Cox is an artist who makes fantastic pieces heavily informed by his musical passion for reggae and dub. A lot of his pieces are based on specific tracks or albums, and his work has a wonderful vibrancy and rawness that perfectlty conveys the energy and vibe of the music. He's recentlly been working with Mr Benn on an ongoing project based on 'Stars' by Cornell Campbell which is his favourite track of all time. Mr Benn has recreated the Stars riddim for this project and David has made a beautiful stop frame animation of his work inspired by the tune to accompany Mr Benn's dub version. Out On The Streets...

As the burning and looting continues on the streets of our countries capital, some of the ramifications of the last few days actions are starting to hit home. The SONY/PIAS warehouse in Enfield was burned to the ground, along with many independent labels entire stock (full list of labels here). Amongst them were finished copies of the forthcoming "Battle For Seattle" album of Nirvana covers by Little Roy (produced by Prince Fatty).

As a blog who serves up plenty of free music, we're urging all of our readers to support UK independent labels today and pre-order this releases digitally (as well as any others you fancy from the list above). Without income from such sales, many of these releases may physically not happen, as many small labels simply cannot bounce back from such a loss.

Big shout to everyone who has been affected by this mindless violence on the streets. We're not going to start a discussion here, but are hoping for a sense of calm to return soon.

Great response to this edit I knocked up - ran out of downloads in less than 24 hours, so I'm posting it up here too. Basically its a re-edit of a remix of Daniel Haaksman's "Puerto Rico". The original is a banger itself, but someone going by the name of Neki Stranac has chopped it up into a crazy moombahton affair. I've added a DJ friendly intro, more shouting, a bit of siren and a few chops and turns.

Didn't expect to see this anytime soon. In the world of mash-up block party bashment reggae rave isht, Jon Carter was always a bit of a legend in my books, back in the mid '90s.
Regularly turning it out at the Heavenly Social at Turnmills, where I caught him spin a few times, and then under his Monkey Mafia moniker, producing tough ragga breaks of his own right, just before the Big Beat scene crashed unceremoniously on it's arse, like a drunk cousin at a wedding.

So, after a long long while, Mr Carter is BACK, diverting from playing House music in superclubs, and going back to his roots of making dutty sound system skankin' fuelled riddims.

I for one hope there'll be more of this to come soon...

How Many You Had, Where You From?

I was recently asked to do another mix for the rather amazing Bestival, where I am lucky enough to be playing again this year. You can still check my last mix here, but I thought I'd indulge myself a bit on this new one. A few friends have been banging on at me to put together an old school rave mix for some time, as I still have a lot of the old records stashed away, so I thought this was the perfect opportunity. There's nothing too deep or edgy on here, although you have been hard pushed to find anything "cool" at the time - it was a time when UK bass music as we know it was in it's infancy and pretty much everything was thrown into the pot. Samples from reggae, soul, hip hop, jazz, pop and funk were all squeezed together - sometimes with more success than others. It was also a time before the internet or any real radio exposure - music was passed around on illegally recorded tapes, and if you wanted to know a tune you probably had to risk the shame of singing it to your local moody record shop owner (who still probably wouldn't sell it to you if he had it!). Most of the records on here were made by unknown producers in their bedrooms, which shows how the scene has gone full circle once again. There are a few high profile or pop hits included, which shows how quickly the music became mainstream.

Anyway, enough rose tinted waffle...slap some Vicks Vaporub on, get on one and remember...hardcore will never die!!

I was asked a while back to pick a tune from the Dub Pistols rather impressive back catalogue to remix - having scoured their 4 studio albums I plumped for their version of The Specials "Gangsters" as it's always been one of my favourite tunes. Getting Terry Hall's acapella was a bit of a moment in itself, but to have this released as part of the remix CD is a real honour. Big up to the man like Adam Prescott who jumped in the studio with me for this - unfortunately the remix has only been credited to myself - just wanted to put the record straight!

I was recently asked by man like Lotek to be his DJ on the remaining dates of his tour while he's over in the UK (he now resides in Australia). For those that don't know, Lo co-produced Roots Manuva's first 2 albums, as well as sharing mic duties for many years and co-ordinating the live shows around that time. He also produced Speech Debelle's Mercury winning album "Speech Therapy", so it goes without saying he's not only a badboy producer, but also a very very good MC. Anyway, we've been practicing this week and all I can say is DAMN! it is sounding TIGHT!

We're debuting the new line up of the Haggis Horns, myself and Flo on backing vocals this sunday at the Vibe Bar on Brick Lane. It's FREE Entry, so get yourself down for a slice of the nice.

From the very first night at 93 Feet East, it's been a wicked ride and we're so grateful to our fans and followers for giving us the support to keep rolling. So, I was more than a little bit disappointed with the Tyler The Creator album. After all the hype and pant-wetting from critics the world over I thought it was a pretty dull effort, although I'm pretty sure I'm not in the target demographic for such a release. I guess naughty words, predictable self-agrandising and "edgy" subject matter don't really do it for me anymore! The standout track "Yonkers" however, has been on constant rotation on my ipod, and this Lil Silva rework is definitely doing something for me.

Premiered a few weeks back on their Rinse FM show, the Heatwave guys have just unleashed their Adele rework on the blog world. True, there's more than enough mash-ups of this tune doing the rounds already (including my own effort right here), but Gabriel and the crew have twisted this up nice, creating one of the biggest blends we've heard for a while. Big tune for the summer dropping next monday on BBE records and from an artist we haven't heard from in a while. Australia's Katalyst has dropped more than his share of niceness in the past - mainly on the beats/downtempo sort of tip (infact I'm sure I remember a quote calling him Oz's answer to DJ Shadow), but he's produced a fair few bangers along the way too. One thing I don't remember him doing is fat, soulful, funky reggae...and it's an instant mystery why!?! Featuring one of our favourite reggae/soul songstresses Stephanie McKay, the song is a reworking of the classic "No Place Like Home" by Desmond Dekker, very reminiscent of her classic "Take Me Over" which of course, was on top of another JA classic. A massive thanks to all those supporting the Dub Zealand compilation launched earlier this month. While it has been slowly creeping up charts at Beatport and Juno, Jstar is donating all his share (which aint much so a hard nudge to the ribs and he's more than doubled it) over to the Christchurch Earthquake fund..

Back in the early 90's, whilst I was at college and holding down my (*rudeboy*) Saturday job at Woolworths in Basingstoke (*shots fired*), I used to spend a LOT of time loitering around in Sight, Sound & Motion Records - a small independent record shop run by Marvellous Cain, that sold Jungle, a bit of Hip Hop, a bit of New Jack Swing and nothing else.

Occasionally I'd jump behind the counter and shot a few DJ Hype mixtapes, but mostly I just used to watch this geezer do his thing. Legend in the game and the first guy that ever let me touch a Technics 1210. For that alone, he's got my lifelong respect.

This is a taste of how he used to do, and still does..

Not a good week for music as we learn today that Nate Dogg has also passed at the ridiculously young age of 41. Without a doubt king of the hooks in west coast hip hop and a voice that loaded any track with instant playa cred, his vocals have graced many a classic. From his debut on Dr Dre's seminal G-Funk set "The Chronic" and Snoop Dogg's timeless Doggystyle to mainstream appearances with Pharoahe Monch, Mark Ronson and Eve, he is undoubtedly best remembered for his massive hit with Warren G "Regulate", which we're posting here today in it's reggae-rubbed Jstar remix.

RIP Smiley Culture

News has just reached us of the sad and untimely passing of UK dancehall legend Smiley Culture. The details are not yet clear, but it appears the 47 year old died as the result of an altercation with the police at his home. For those who don't know, Smiley was one of the original members of the Saxon Soundsystem who later found fame in the UK charts with "Cockney Translation" and "Police Officer". His lyrical style, similar to the fast-chat of Tippa Irie, Asher Senator and Papa Levi is an obvious source to many of the styles used by todays Drum & Bass, Grime & Dubstep MCs.

It's unbelievable now that this song made it onto the BBCs flagship music show at the time - with references to ganja and anti-establishment lyrics. I vividly remember my cousin having this recorded on a Betamax video and him watching it on repeat trying to work out the words, whilst I tried to work out why the police were playing instruments on Top Of The Pops.

By pure coincidence, I was meant to pick up test pressing of for the next NICE UP! release - a drum & bass reworking of this very hit. We might have to bust out our kangols and pringle knits too.

Goggle

I've been getting quite a few requests for the remix of Tanya Stephens "Goggle" I used in my mix for FBI Radio last year (click here to check it if you haven't already), so I thought I'd post it up here. Unfortunately I have no idea who made it, or infact where I got it from originally, so cannot give any props or referrals apart from to the original. I know it was originally cut to the Cloak & Dagger riddim, and there was a very similar "Busta Beat" riddim doing the rounds at the same time, but that was a remade version of the "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See" beat, whereas this sounds like a straight mash-up.

Either way, it bumps! If you can shed any light on this, please drop a comment!

Fresh in from Mungo's Hifi is this remix package of Israeli dancehall/dubstep producer Kalbata's recent single "Play Music Selecta". We've been loving the original since it appeared on the B-side of his last 12" for Soul Jazz, but here Mungo's step it up in a more steppers fashion along with some other voicings on the same riddim from Lady Ann, Ranking Levy and the late, great Sugar Minott. Also part of the package is a wicked RSD remix of "Sugar Plum Plum" featuring Little John.
